OUR COACHES

Business Coaches need to be proven business leaders with substantial industry experience before they can coach business executives.  All  our Coaches have been involved in senior positions in business, whether in large operations, in the public sector or having built up their own companies.

We know what it’s like to run a business, we’ve all been there, made the mistakes, not learnt the lessons and continued to do things in the same old ways.

We have now learnt how to be coaches, and this combination makes us supremely qualified to work with business leaders from companies of all shapes and sizes. All our coaches subscribe to our Code of Conduct .

Christopher Elwes Business Coach"So much more than leadership development,

it benefits everything you do"

Christopher Elwes

For about 30 years I worked in the Art Auction Business where I was MD of Christies South Ken. and then CEO of Bonhams.

Auction houses are people intensive places, where managers have to juggle the aspirations and whims of highly specialised Fine Art experts, while managing the expectations of buyers and sellers. Against the background of an industry that was not paid very well I had to quickly perfect my people skills.

Instinctively I started coaching, even though I didn’t realise it. What I clearly understand now is that if only I had had the benefit of a Coach, I would have been a better MD, and I have little doubt that that would have impacted directly on the bottom line.

Just for example a Coach would have enabled me to see that some people were never going to be motivated by team spirit, and a Coach would also have helped to keep me focused on the bottom line.

I have now been coaching directors and senior staff for 9 years and I am always amazed at the immediate benefit that the intervention of a coach provides. Time and again, within a few hours, clients have found new ways of doing things: new solutions to issues or a new and powerful focus.

I am absolutely convinced that all Managing Directors need  a business coach, and in particular those whose initial reaction is that ‘coaching is a waste of their time’!

Jacky Sherman Business Coach “The Whole is Greater than the Sum of the Parts”

Jacky Sherman

I started my career in rehabilitation nursing and quickly developed a passion for enabling people to achieve their potential whatever the challenges.  My career progressed within the NHS culminating in becoming the Chief Executive at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital.

Leading a teaching hospital meant leading a wide spectrum of people who, although they shared a common vision, had very different personal aspirations and the means for attaining them.  I was privileged to work with these teams of people who performed near miracles when working well together.

This background made becoming a coach a natural choice for my next role in life. I have built on this experience and have gained new techniques in coaching and mediation that enables my business clients to achieve more than they believed was possible.

Since 2003 I have been working with Managing Directors and managers in a wide range of commercial companies who have one thing in common.  They want to improve how they lead their teams in order to get the best results with the least problems.  I am proud to have coached them to achieve this.

Time and again I find that what holds companies back is the quality of their working relationships. Equally sustainable success is achieved when their people act as one… a team.

Roger Thomas Business Coach"The essence is to build mutual respect

and focus on desired outcomes"

Roger Thomas

I’ve been coaching – one way or another – for nearly 30 years. As a manager with IBM, it was clear that my job was “to get the best out of my people” and most of the personal development I undertook there was geared towards “manager as coach.”

Later at ScottishTelecom I managed and coached managers both as senior sales manager and as the General Manager of a £50m division of ScottishPower.

I’ve managed sales, technical, and staff people and coached MDs/CEOs and senior managers in companies in a range of sectors, learning and improving my own capabilities each time.

I relish seeing the changes that people can make – not least improving their enjoyment of their work and, especially, getting the best out of their own people, and finding that really motivating.

I am also a qualified assessor for the Scottish Business Excellence programme, based on the European Foundation for Quality Management, an advisor to Young Enterprise Scotland, and a qualified sports coach.

Coaching is really challenging – but also very satisfying both for the client and coach.

Since starting as an independent coach 9 years ago with Pharos Performance, I have been coaching directors and senior managers from businesses of all shapes and sizes

 “Real growth and sustainable change
should be a top-down process"

Ian McCalla

As an entrepreneur and business leader in the IT, software and telecoms industries, I have learnt much about corporate leadership. The most unambiguous of lessons has been that any serious investment made in senior managers and staff will be repaid many times over when growing and developing a business. It is for this reason I have, over the last 9 years, focused my energies on helping businesses grow by developing the strengths and capabilities of their leaders and managers.

Everyone has hidden strengths and abilities and many executives have undiscovered or undeveloped leadership skills. My role is to help these executives unlock those invaluable resources, resolve work / life conflicts and achieve greater success in their business (and sometimes personal) lives.

Having originally graduated in electronics engineering, my early career sought to exploit the opportunities presented by the emerging microcomputer and software industries. Over the following 25 years I started, built and sold five hi-tech companies, two to US listed corporations. In 2003 I retrained and qualified as an executive coach and have been enjoying this new career ever since.

David Barkel Business coach"Now more than ever, your best people
are your  strongest asset."

David Barkel

It has become a truism, but it is still the case that people are the most precious asset of any organisation. In these challenging times it is even more important for companies to get the very best from their staff. I am passionate about developing individuals and teams to their full potential and in leadership positions have had the privilege to coach team members to succeed and excel in their jobs over many years. I am amazed at what people are able to deliver if they have the tools, environment and proactive support.

I believe that everyone has the potential to reap high personal rewards from coaching, and that this is a powerful intervention in anyone’s career. In particular those people who have risen through the company ranks as a result of their ability to get things done, but who may not have had the opportunity or support to fully develop their leadership skills.

Prior to training as an executive coach, I spent over 20 years in the challenging arena of the chemicals industry, having entered this sector following my graduation with a first degree and PhD in Chemistry from University College, London.  I have enjoyed a diverse career in both blue chip and SME environments at director level in Europe and the Far East with companies such as Courtaulds and ICI.

Trevor Grantham Business Coach

“Coaching is like opening up the genius available
in every person already within them”

 Trevor Grantham

I have been in Business Consulting for the last 25 years. Prior to this I held several senior management positions. It was whilst I was in management that I first recognised the real benefits of coaching. I was lucky enough to have a coach for an extended period with one management position. This was the key ingredient to my success in a very exciting and full time of my life.

Since then coaching has played a key part in all aspects of my consulting career. I have coached teams of all descriptions, senior managers, middle managers, business owners and many many more.

In all areas I believe coaching is driven by the needs of the client and of the business they work for. It is about getting people to recognise and achieve their full potential with a focus on what they need to do now and in the future. It is a partnership between coach and client.

We can all benefit from being coached, I still use one now and I am sure I always will whilst I have things to learn. That will be for ever.

Alan Bond Business Coach "You are the expert on you, I act as a catalyst
to help you to achieve your goals”

Alan Bond

After graduating from Aberdeen University with a BSc Engineering I immediately took up a one-year graduate apprenticeship to develop my practical engineering skills.

In the field of coaching, I did it the other way around, developing my coaching skills and experience during a career in the oil and gas industry then gaining my postgraduate certificate in coaching later, coming full circle by returning as a mature student to Aberdeen University in 2008.

Coaching others played an increasingly significant and personally rewarding part of my 27 year career in technical and senor commercial roles with BP.

Today, I draw on that corporate experience to provide coaching for business owners and to support individuals going through a variety of role transitions, including the transition from technical to commercial/management positions.  I get a real ‘buzz’ from seeing others successfully navigate the transition into new roles, flourish in their career development and transform their business performance.

I am also a chartered engineer and a regular professional review interview chair/panellist for the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Kelly Harrold Business Coach Coaching gives clients the edge in challenging times”

Kelly Hedges

Before qualifying as a Coach I spent 18 years in media, planning and negotiating advertising on behalf of a broad list of corporate clients, and later leading a department in this area. Influencing powerful media owners takes strong communication, relationship and influencing skills.  I served on the Executive Board of a Media Communications’ Agency and led a company transformation project over 2 years. The aim was to increase efficiencies and extend people’s core skills within an industry undergoing significant change. Instinctively I relied on coaching to  change attitudes and behaviour, before being able to deliver new processes and learning within the company.

Now in my 40s, I have mentored and facilitated at Board level for over 10 years.

Both supportive and challenging, I am passionate about working with people to achieve the results they want for themselves and their business. The broad range of andCoaching offerings enables me to match  the needs of the individual with their preferred learning  style – either using a structured programme with a unique combination of tools, or a more fluid approach with a wide range of coaching techniques.

If you feel like you’re wading through treacle and want to get to the other side, or want even more triumphant fanfares, please get in touch.

Stephen Billyeald

I worked in the retail sector for some 30 years, first with Marks & Spencer through the 1970s where I learnt how to manage people, as well as gaining a solid business background. I was then MD of Ryman during the 1980s where I managed the turnaround, flotation and subsequent sale of this stationery retailer with over 600 staff.

During the 1990s I worked with two lady entrepreneurs, first of all building a group of companies in retail and wholesale and secondly leading the reorganisation and development of the European operations of a South African home furnishings retailer, with 70 shops in ten countries. In both of these roles I provided the business and management foil to the entrepreneurial flair of the owners.

In more recent years I have helped several business owners to develop their companies through good times as well as through the more challenging times of recession and change. My business background and the experience of working with strong-willed entrepreneurs have taught me how to get the best out of people using tact and diplomacy as well as business acumen.

In my coaching role I find that business owners really appreciate the opportunity to discuss their opportunities, issues and ambitions with someone who has “been there and done it”.

 Colin Evand Business coach

Colin Evans

The whole culture, ethos and ultimately the success of a business comes from the top.
Whether it’s political parties, military units or business enterprises, leaders can achieve
remarkable results through the way they consider issues and then act.
But “it’s lonely at the top” and especially so for a MD/Owner of a SME.
Not for them the non-execs or advisors to bounce thoughts and ideas around.

I enjoyed a more than 30 year career in a “people” business latterly as CEO and then Chairman of Austin Reed, a clothing retailer and manufacturer. As the leader of a small PLC I had to try and keep all the stakeholders happy and continue to grow the business. I was fortunate in being supported by excellent non-execs but if one of them had been trained in modern coaching methods I am sure I would have derived considerably more benefit.

During the last few years I have been working with leaders of small businesses and am convinced that coaching achieves an excellent return on the time and money invested in it.

“Coaching can turn your aspirations into reality”

Conrad Lohr

During the past ten years I have worked in the UK for a manufacturing SME as finance director and managing director. By far my most satisfying achievements over that period have all involved employee development and my coaching them in some form or another.
Empowering sales executives to identify and promote new products, encouraging engineers to innovate and develop alternative products, and mentoring the development of a receptionist to become the company accountant, are a few examples of how employees have responded to a combination of motivation, willingness to change and desire to improve performance.
As a natural leader, and someone who derives immense satisfaction from helping people to achieve their goals and enhance their performance, I look forward to coaching  executives and business leaders from every type of business, to embrace change and achieve their dreams.

Deborah Crompton

Having run several of my own businesses, I learnt very quickly that a successful business is all about the people. Equipped with an MBA, I realised that technical skills were not enough to gain competitive advantage and I started using some of the techniques that I employed in sports coaching, with great results.

Our highly versatile and friendly approach allows you to set the pace and decide the focus. You can choose either to follow a structured framework, or to adopt a more flexible, non-prescriptive approach to coaching. Either way, coaching focuses upon your individual goals and objectives and how to best achieve them.

Enabling someone through coaching techniques to become the athlete/employee/manager they are striving to become, is a great privilege. To accompany them for a few steps of their personal journey towards reaching and excelling their chosen goals, even more so.
